This year marks the beginning of a new road for me as an artist & educator. After 12 years of retirement, last September a friend of mine challenged me to jury into Spanish Village Art Studios with my woven baskets. Although many people told me not to expect to get in on my first try, to my amazement I was accepted.
A week later, the owner of Studio 40 called me and asked me if I would consider being a partner in her studio with two other artists. Soon I was signing a lease with Teresa, Susan, and Mindy to begin my residency in Studio 40 October 1, 2012.
It's been a fast and furious end-of-year with the Holiday crowds and gift-giving frenzy going on. My fingers are calloused from trying to get my inventory up to take advantage of the season but it was well worth it. I've sold many of my handcrafted baskets but have also found that I get lonely in the studio on Wednesdays when things are rather quiet mid-day. I'm so used to working in a costume studio full of artists creating together while chatting and discussing alternatives, that sitting by myself weaving is rather boring.
So, for all our our benefits, I've started up Wednesday Weavers which will meet at Spanish Village Studio 40 every Wednesday from Noon to 3pm except for Christmas and New Year days. My goal is to teach Beginning Pine Needle and Twined Basketmaking during this time while providing a place for fellow basket makers to meet, create & discuss our works & techniques.
